How to Downgrade Your PSP from 2.71 to 1.5

Before you attempt to downgrade a PSP 2.71 (meaning PlayStation Portable 2.71 version) into a PSP 1.5 firmware version, techies on the net have cautioned PSP 2.71 owners about the dangers of downgrading. One risk is that you will wind up with a pretty useless PSP if something goes wrong. Now that's a pretty big risk to take. To prevent problems from developing, you should examine your PSP to see if it has a modern TA-082 motherboard first, because they say the downgrade doesn't work on these types of PSP motherboards.

To find out if you have a TA-082 motherboard, open the UMD and look at the upper right-hand side – if it gives this info "ic-1003", bingo, you have a TA-082 motherboard. Meaning, sorry, you cannot downgrade your PSP.

You should also know what the term "homebrew" means. Homebrew refers to video games which are created by members of the video game playing public, based on non-user programmable game platforms or stored on proprietary hardware. It may also cover video games which are marketed for commercial use but lack an official license from the console manufacturer for development. Homebrew video games are made by small teams or even an individual programmer, but are not necessarily illegal. Their production is made possible because the game platforms may be quite simple that even one person can create a homebrew program. A homebrew may also be known as a freeware software application.

The downgrade you use may be considered a form of homebrew actually. One source says the downgrade process from a 2.71 firmware into a 1.5 firmware goes like this:

Get the easy installer from http://www.sendspace.com/file/0mob1d via download.

Look for the archive where you should secure the files named:
2.71_TA-082_-_1.50.exe
README_DE
README_ENG_ORIGINAL_DARK_ALEX
TA-082_Downgrader.pngfile.

You may then format your memstick then change the PSP to its default settings.

Initiate the installer so that all that needs to be installed will go to your MS (inclusive of HEND)

At completion, you should check if you have a UMD inserted first (if you do, remove it) so you may move to the XMB area called PHOTO so HEND can be loaded. If it doesn't load during your first attempt, restart then make a second attempt.

Your PSP ought to restart on its own if the HEND has been loaded properly.

You may then visit GAME in your XMB to initiate load/start idstoragechange so that you can alter certain keys.

After the program is finished and your XMB is loaded again, you may return to GAME menu where you will spot the "Update X.YX" Generic downgrader. Proceed to load/start this downgrader.

The 1.5 firmware should proceed to be installed into your PSP. If it fails to do so, look for the command to press "x" so that you can restart your PSP. A BSOD should result. - - - Press "o", and punch in your data.

You now have a fully-functional PSP 1.5 firmware version. The same source on the net showed that some people with a PSP 2.5 may opt to upgrade first to a 2.71 before downgrading to a 1.5 version.
